When Ubisoft initially released XDefiant, the free-to-play shooter attracted a large number of players. Insider Tom Henderson discovered that three months post-launch, the audience's interest in the project has significantly waned.

According to one of Henderson’s sources, the total online player count for XDefiant across all platforms barely reaches 20,000 people. Another source indicated that the situation is even worse. They claim Ubisoft would be thrilled to see 20,000 concurrent players, but the actual numbers are much lower.

It is claimed that alongside the decline in online player numbers, user spending on in-game purchases has also decreased.

Henderson's sources added that Ubisoft has demanded the XDefiant team rectify the situation by the launch of the game's third season, threatening to withdraw support otherwise. The developers doubt they can meet this goal, especially since the season is planned to release shortly after Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. They also fear layoffs if they fail to increase the shooter’s player base.
