The Government of India has announced that esports tournaments will now be able to take place as part of national sporting events. The Department of Sports under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports of India will be responsible for the development of esports in the country.
Lokesh Suji, the head of the Esports Federation of India, said that the authorities have opened up new opportunities for the development of the industry. He hopes that over time, esports will become as popular in India as cricket, football, basketball and other traditional sports.
