- The year 2023 was a record year for the German gaming market. Its revenue reached 9.97 billion euros for the first time, an increase of 6% compared to 2022.
- Most of the amount came from microtransactions in games — 4.74 billion euros (+6%). Sales of the games themselves amounted to 1.1 billion euros (+4%).
- Sales of consoles, gaming accessories and other hardware amounted to 3.26 billion euros (+7%).
- German residents spent 860 million euros (-1%) over the year on subscriptions like Game Pass and PlayStation Plus, as well as services like GeForce Now.
"The German gaming market continues to grow, but a close look at the data shows how difficult times have come for gaming companies," said Felix Falk, head of GAME. "This is especially true for small and medium-sized companies in Germany, most of which have only small capital and therefore are particularly quickly feeling the impact of a tightening investment climate."
Earlier, the German authorities reduced the budget of the financing program for German game developers. They have allocated 48.7 million euros for 2024, compared with 70 million euros in 2023.
