The closure of Coffee Stain Malmö was announced on LinkedIn by the studio's head, Daniel Persson. He stated that the decision was made by the parent company, Coffee Stain Group, but did not delve into details.
"Creating this office from scratch has been one of the most significant events in my career. It all started with an idea, which then materialized into a wonderful team of talented people. I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together," Persson wrote.
Coffee Stain Group itself did not comment on the closure of the Malmö studio, so the exact reasons remain unknown.
It is possible that Coffee Stain Group was motivated by a desire to cut costs or optimize its structure. Late last year, the company officially separated from Embracer Group, which likely led to a reassessment of some business processes. Additionally, in its financial report for October-December 2025, Coffee Stain Group reported a 25% drop in revenue and a threefold reduction in net profit.
As noted by the portal MobileGamer, at the time of closure, there were 17 people working at Coffee Stain Malmö. Whether all of them were ultimately laid off or some were transferred to other Coffee Stain Group teams is unclear.
