Apple is working on an augmented reality headset that could be ready by 2020, according to business publication Bloomberg, citing sources familiar with the company’s plans.

The headset will have its own display. The device will run on the rOS (reality operation system) operating system and a modified Apple processor designed to reduce the size and power consumption of the novelty.

The retail launch is expected no earlier than 2020, but the technology may be ready in one form or another by 2019.

According to Bloomberg, Apple AR engineers and developers are testing their ideas on HTC Vive headsets, and from next year they plan to switch to their own devices built on the iPhone hardware.

Apple is also experimenting with possible AR headset interfaces, trying out touchpads, voice commands and gestures.

Bloomberg clarifies that Apple declined to comment on information about the work on the AR headset.
