Arrowhead Game Studios has no plans to develop Helldivers 3. In an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun, the studio's creative director Johan Pilestedt explained that the main issue with a potential sequel would be the competition with the already existing Helldivers 2.
According to Pilestedt, releasing a sequel would divide the audience. Therefore, the studio considers it more reasonable to continue developing Helldivers 2, which maintains an active community.
“The main competitor for Helldivers 3 would be Helldivers 2. Releasing a separate sequel only makes sense if it’s so different that both games can coexist simultaneously,” stated Pilestedt.
He compared Helldivers 2 to LEGO and Warhammer—passions that people can dedicate years to. According to the developer, such games should become long-term hobbies that one can return to even after extended breaks.
“When you have an active community that brings in friends, creates memes, and supports the life of the game, you don’t need a sequel,” added Pilestedt.
Currently, about 95% of Arrowhead's employees work on Helldivers 2. The studio as a whole has around 150 people. A small team is simultaneously working on a prototype for the next project, but it is not related to the development of Helldivers 3.
To recall, Helldivers 2 was released in February 2024 on PC and PlayStation 5, and in August 2025 it reached Xbox Series X|S. Within the first 12 weeks, the game sold over 12 million copies.
