Amazon has decided to shut down the Amazon Appstore on devices running the Android operating system. It will cease operations on these devices on August 20, 2025.

Amazon Appstore closing

Amazon has informed developers that it will no longer add new applications to the Android version of the Amazon Appstore catalog. However, updates to existing apps can be made until the store closes.

Additionally, as of yesterday, users of the Amazon Appstore can no longer purchase Amazon Coins, the virtual currency used to buy games and apps. It is recommended to spend accumulated "coins" by August 20, 2025, but if users are unable to do so for any reason, Amazon will refund their money.

In the Frequently Asked Questions section on Amazon's support page, it is stated that the continued functionality of apps downloaded from the Amazon Appstore on Android is "not guaranteed" after the store closes. Subscriptions purchased through it will continue to be valid and can be managed via the website.

Despite the closure of the Android version of the Amazon Appstore, there is no talk of the store completely ceasing to exist. It will remain available on Amazon's own devices, such as Fire TV and Fire Tablet.

In a comment to TechCrunch, the company stated that the vast majority of users interact with the Amazon Appstore primarily through its own devices, with only a few using Android devices. Consequently, the company ultimately decided to abandon this platform.
