Shovel Knight took almost two years to sell 1.2 million copies. The game developers consider this a success.
As the authors from the Yacht Club Games studio noted in their blog, previously none of their games had been bought more than 50 thousand times. Most of the sales came from digital distribution channels – 1 million were sold through them.
The game was released on most modern platforms, excluding mobile (Nintendo Wii U, Nintendo 3DS, Sony PS4, Sony PS3, PlayStation Vita, Xbox One, Steam, GOG, Humble Store and Amazon Fire TV). Most of it came from Steam and Nintendo platforms. At the same time, the game has not yet been released in Asia on Wii U and 3DS.
On all devices, except those from Sony, the game received a discount for the holidays. But, as a rule, it was no more than 33%. Price retention was one of the guys’ strategies. They believe that the greater the pleasure of a good game, the more substantial the amount given for it.
On average, monthly sales of Shovel Knight range from 25 to 35 thousand copies.
For comparison, Stardew Valley took about two months to overcome the threshold of 1 million sales on Steam.
