Last Friday, November 22, the analytical company SuperData reported on the financial results of October. She said that over the past month, players spent $8.84 billion on games. We are talking about total spending on the console, desktop and mobile markets in digital retail.

The current revenue is 3% less than the market generated a year earlier. Analysts explain the decline by the absence of releases this October comparable in scale to last year Red Dead Redemption 2. The decline could have been even more significant if not for the mobile market, whose turnover grew by 7% year-on-year.

The main conclusions of the October SuperData report

1) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare sold 4.75 million digital copies in October (this is total sales, taking into account both the console and the desktop). This is the best start of the year on the market, but not the best for the series. A year earlier, the initial sales of Black Ops 4 in the first month were higher (the restart of Modern Warfare has an 11% drop). Analysts explain three reasons:

  • the novelty had fewer days in the month (Black Ops 4 was released on August 3, and Modern Warfare — in October);
  • in Modern Warfare, the average cost of digital versions was less;
  • Modern Warfare did not have a bundle with seasonal access at the start.

2) Call of Duty Mobile broke not only into the tops of downloads, as we wrote earlier, but turned out to be on the 12th place in the world top of the highest-grossing games on mobile platforms by the end of the month. SuperData believes that the game could earn $ 57 million (82% of the amount was on iOS), and its MAU reached 116 million.

3) October was the best month of Apex Legends, not counting the months in the starting quarter. In 31 days, the Battle Royale earned $45 million. This is $16 million more than in September.
