In the wake of the record-breaking launch of the PlayStation 5, Sony has decided to increase the amount of annual bonuses for its Japanese employees. This time they will be able to count on a bonus equal to the salary for seven months. This was reported by GameRant with reference to the Japanese broadcaster NHK.
This year, for most local Sony employees, the bonus will amount to several tens of thousands of dollars. Some top managers may even receive a six-figure bonus.
Many Japanese companies pay bonuses to employees every April (that’s when the financial year ends in the country). However, the bonus for Sony employees, equal this time to the salary for seven months, may turn out to be a record. It is at least much more than the amount that the local trade union initially requested during the negotiations.
Sony’s decision was most likely influenced by the success of the PlayStation 5. According to the NPD Group, it became the fastest-selling console in the history of the United States (according to the results of four months). In February, Sony itself reported 4.5 million PS5S sold, and at the beginning of the year it called the launch of the console the largest in history.
The company is expected to report an annual profit of $10 billion at the end of April. Sony estimates that the profit of its gaming division for the fiscal year will be about $3.2 billion.
