In 2016, the market volume of esports competitions in Sweden amounted to $40 million, while Russia earned $35.4 million.
Sweden has shifted Russia to second place in the ranking of European esports markets, which it headed in 2015. In turn, France moved from second to third place, and Spain left the top three esports countries of the Old World.
According to the latest estimate by PayPal and SuperData, the virtual competition market in our country will grow to $40 million by 2018 alone. The forecast has become more pessimistic, a year ago experts predicted a turnover of $43.7 million by this date.
The Russian esports market continues to develop, and grew by 4.5% last year.
The total volume of the markets of Hungary, Greece, Italy, Spain, Poland, Russia, the Czech Republic, France, Israel, the Netherlands, Great Britain and Sweden at the end of 2016 amounted to $301 million.
The assessment of market volumes takes into account only championships, ticket purchases, sponsorships and prize funds of competitions.
