Available exclusively in South Korea, the Lineage 2M mobile novelty is among the top 10 highest-grossing games in the world for the second month in a row. Since the release on November 25, her earnings have reached $152 million.

The game has achieved such results, despite the competition within the franchise itself.

In the mobile games market, the Lineage franchise is represented by two more strong projects:

  • launched in December 2016 Lineage 2: Revolution (Netmarble);
  • appeared in June 2017 Lineage M (NCsoft).

Both earned $1 billion in their native Korean market in the first year of sales. But Lineage 2M is unlikely to succeed.

The starting results of Lineage 2M are still worse than those of its predecessors. Now the game earns plus or minus $ 50-60 million for every four weeks. For comparison: Lineage 2: Revolution earned $176 million in the first month alone. Lineage M’s collections in the debut month were even more successful — $233 million.

Nevertheless, Lineage 2M managed to cannibalize the current revenue of both titles. After the release of the novelty, there is a reduction in cash registers for both Lineage 2: Revolution and Lineage M.

For Revolution, the situation is far from catastrophic.

The “golden” times of this MMORPG in the Korean market are long gone. Its sales have been on the decline for a long time. The descending line on its income chart can easily be explained by the long-outlined decline in indicators (while by Western standards, the game still earns a lot).

Lineage M suffers more from the launch of Lineage 2M. By the end of December, it missed $20 million in revenue. The chart from AppMagic shows the impact of new items on Lineage M sales especially clearly.

It turns out that NCsoft, which is the developer and publisher of both projects, hit its own sales with the release of the novelty.

 Perhaps, while preparing the launch of Lineage 2M, the company believed that the scenario of June-July 2017 would repeat. Then the release of Lineage M did not hit sales of Lineage 2: Revolution. On the contrary, he returned interest to the Netmarble game.
