The third quarter of 2014 for Gameloft ended, to put it mildly, ambiguously. Being the world leader in downloads in July-September, the company seriously lost money. Gameloft’s sales were significantly lower than they were a year ago.

In the third quarter of this year, Gameloft’s sales amounted to €55.8 million. This is 10% less than a year earlier, when the French reported revenue of €61.7 million for the same period of time.

The stagnation of quarterly indicators continues for the second quarter in a row, however, before that, the company had a decrease in sales dynamics. In June, the company’s management explained the low figures for the company (€55 million) by the lack of new releases. In the third quarter, during which five high-profile IP projects were released, there was no explanation as such.

“Gameloft has returned to the practice of releasing new games on a more regular basis. Despite the fact that this is not yet noticeable in quarterly sales, we believe that the results of this practice will begin to manifest themselves in future quarters.”

Michel Guillemot, CEO of the companyIn other words, the bet on new games has not yet justified itself.

Modern Combat 5: Blackout, Ice Age Adventures, Spider-Man Unlimited, Asphalt Overdrive and Cars: Fast as Lightning did not break out into unambiguous hits of the Despicable Me: Minion Rush and Asphalt 8: Airborne level.

In part, this can be explained by the fact that of the three Gameloft projects for film licenses, only one was “accompanied” by a tape – Spider-Man Unlimited. Ice Age Adventures and Cars: Fast as Lightning exploited “old themes”; Modern Combat 5: Blackout – turned out to be paid again, but no longer exceptionally beautiful; and Asphalt Overdrive was not only “about the 80s”, but turned out to be a runner, not a race.

Of the €167 million that Gameloft has earned since the beginning of the year, these games account for only 8%. The rest of the money is the tail of the old games.
