The turnover of the segment of fritupley MMOs is growing fastest in the digital games market. According to SuperData, this August its global sales volume jumped by 28% compared to August last year.

In its report, the company does not specify what became the driver of sales. However, looking at the table of the highest-grossing games of last month (it is slightly lower), we can assume that the growth was partly facilitated by the success of the mobile Lineage M, which earned $ 233 million only in the first month of the official release in South Korea.

Exclusively thanks to the free MMO segment, the global digital games market grew in August, not stagnated. Its growth compared to the same indicator last year was 11%. In total, the global digital games market earned $7.9 billion over the last month of summer.

The turnover of the PC games segment, despite the box office success of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, fell by 10%. This is attributed to the lack of releases on the platform comparable in scale to No Man’s Sky, and the hype around Overwatch, for which the first event for the game, Summer Games, was launched in August last year.

Sales volumes in such segments as social games and paid MMO also decreased last August. Moreover, sales of the second one fell by a quarter, and social networks only by 4%.

The turnover of the console and mobile segment continues to grow. In August, they increased by 11% and 13%, respectively.

In general, the main question that remains after getting acquainted with the figures, why do SuperData analysts talk about the dynamics of overlapping segments? It is clear that the segment of fritupley MMOs includes all platforms. It made sense to somehow divide into platforms and segments. In the current version, everything looks messy.
