A simple game about a yellow bird occupied the download charts in the leading Western markets. Behind her, the first places in the American, British, Canadian App Store and Google Play. But how much is it in dollars?

Our colleagues with PocketGamer.biz it was estimated that this is hardly more than $6000 per day. What did they come from?

To begin with, they assumed that:

  • Number of Flappy Bird downloads – 100 million;
  • everyone who downloaded it – played;
  • the average number of gaming sessions per day is 5;
  • the average number of ad impressions per session is 3 (Flappy Bird earns using Google Ads).

Based on these almost impossible in reality indicators, we have: 100 million downloads, 100 million players, 500 million daily sessions and 15.5 billion advertising impressions per day.

Revenue from displaying 1000 banners (eCPM), on average, $0.02.

Based on this, we calculate: 1.5 billion multiplied by $0.00002 per impression, which gives us $30,000 per day.

But it is clear that this is an impossible scenario. 100 million is too big a figure (although, most likely, Flappy Bird will overcome the 100 million mark in the near future). But that’s not even the point. The statement that everyone who downloaded it will launch it and, moreover, launch it 5 times is fantastic.

For this reason , on PocketGamer.biz the forecast was “lowered”: 50 million downloads, 3 sessions per day and 2 impressions per session. This is also a rather optimistic scenario, but it is a little closer to reality. Starting from it, we can estimate that the project is quite capable of earning up to $ 6000 per day.

So it turns out that even a project-a phenomenon without sensible monetization earns at best, by mobile standards, not very much money.
