The last two film adaptations of game universes have separately collected more than $300 million at the global box office.
The collections of the Warcraft film, whose rental has not yet ended, amounted to $378.4 million. This is the largest amount that a movie has ever scored on a game.
The previous record belonged to “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Ben Kingsley. Then the picture of Mike Newell (Mike Newell) with a production budget of $ 200 million collected $ 336 million.
The production budget of ”Warcraft”, shot by Duncan Jones, was $160 million. It is not known how much was spent on marketing. But in the United States, the film failed, gaining only $ 38 million at the box office. China brought the main box office to the film – $156 million. The third most profitable market turned out to be Russian (together with the CIS), where Warcraft collected $20 million.
“Angry Birds in the cinema” also overcame the high bar, collecting $327 million in a month of rental. A third of the amount came from the United States. The film recouped production costs of $73 million, but not the marketing budget, which reached $300 million.
Both films were received ambiguously by critics and audiences.
In December of this year, another premiere of the film adaptation of the game will take place. “Assassin’s Creed” will be released on the screens. That’s how the Russian box office decided to call the film based on the Assassin’s Creed series.
