Electronic Arts Corporation has bought Respawn Entertainment studio, known for the Titanfall multiplayer shooter franchise. EA has already paid $151 million in cash, $164 million in securities for it and is ready to pay up to $140 million, depending on the future results of the studio.
As part of EA Respawn will develop the shooter Titanfall 3, a game based on the Star Wars universe and a certain VR project.
Electronic Arts stressed that the acquisition of Respawn has nothing to do with the recent decision to liquidate the Visceral Games studio, which also worked on the title for the Star Wars franchise. Recall that the project was transferred to the Canadian office of EA Vancouver for “cardinal revision”.
Prior to the acquisition, Electronic Arts was the publisher of Respawn games. Last year, sales of the second part of Titnafall were lower than expected due to the release of the game at the same time with another high-budget multiplayer shooter Battlefield 1, which was also published by EA.
Buying a studio will probably help EA better manage releases and avoid such situations in the future.
