The next generation of mobile devices will overtake the seventh generation of consoles in terms of performance, said a representative of Nvidia.
While all the attention of the press and players is focused on the upcoming announcements of eighth-generation consoles, which are expected to bring the quality of graphics in games to a new level, there is also a technology race on the mobile “front”.
PS2 and the first Xbox mobile devices have already overtakenMoreover, Tony Tamasi, one of Nvidia’s vice presidents, noted that the next generation of mobile GPUs will be more powerful in terms of performance than those in the PS3 or Xbox 360.
“PS3 and Xbox 360 are slightly more powerful than current mobile devices. Smartphones of the next stage will overtake them,” Tomasi stressed. By the current generation, he meant devices that will run on Tegra 4.
As noted on the Bit-Tech website, video processors of consoles of the seventh generation are archaic. Their performance, if measured by the number of floating-point operations per second, is about 200 Gigaflops. For comparison, this parameter in the latest flagship Nvidia graphics card model – GeForce Titan – reaches 4500 gigaflops. The PS4 has it at 1800 gigaflops. As for Tegra 4, it is already running at 80 gigaflops.
Keith Andrew from PocketGamer noted that in February, the executive director of Fishlabs, Michael Schade, predicted that future generations of gaming consoles would catch up with mobile devices within two to three years.
