The revival of classical genres on mobile platforms continues. Next up is the dungeon crawler.

Following the success of the Finnish The Legend of Grimrock, the dungeon crawler genre, which seemingly died after the release of Wizardy 8 more than a decade ago, began to show renewed interest. One of these “interested” teams was the German Fancy Factory, which announced the game Dungeon Myths: The Sewers of Stonehaven, designed for iOS and Android devices.

Like the creation of Almost Human Ltd., Dungeon Myths is the ideological heir of games such as Eye of the Beholder and Lands of Lore. But there are very few details about the project so far. It is being developed, first of all, with an eye on the iPad 3 and iPad 4. A port is planned for Android, PC and Mac. The developers promise the graphics of the “next generation”, but it still looks, let’s say, somewhat old-fashioned.

Fancy Factory are not new to mobile development, Dungeon Myths is their fifth project. That’s just all the previous ones were not too successful.

In any case, the trend itself is pleasing – the appearance of an increasing number of hardcore and, consider it, classic projects on the mobile market. Another thing is, it is not entirely clear how some of them (this also applies to the Fancy Factory game) will be monetized. Here, the approach that was used by Strategic Simulations Inc. when releasing the Golden Box line of projects, of course, it will not be possible to do. A paid model on the App Store and Google Play is not the best idea.
