An unexpected twist. The management of the Finnish company Jolla has solved the problem of the lack of applications for its own system in an interesting way. They just made Sailfish compatible with Google’s OS.
According to the official press release of Jolla, its platform is now fully compatible with applications created for Android and with devices running on it.
In other words, almost any Android application will run on Sailfish. Moreover, according to the executive director of Jolla Tomi Pienimäk, the user will not notice the difference in their work on an “alien” platform. He mentioned Instagram, WeChat, WhatsApp, Spotify and Instagram as applications thus compatible with the Finnish OS.
Also, the creation of Jolla itself will work on the same devices that Android runs on. It doesn’t matter if it’s a tablet or a smartphone.
With this step, Jolla hopes to attract those device manufacturers, holders of independent stores and developers who, for whatever reason, dislike Android, but until recently have not seen an alternative to it.
Will this help Jolla?
When Blackberry implemented a similar feature in the latest version of its OS, it only worsened its situation, since the implementation left much to be desired. Users downloaded Android applications to the “top ten”, launched it and received constant lags, graphic artifacts and crashes.
On the other hand, if Jolla copes with this, another question will arise. And then how will the Finnish platform be radically different from the numerous modifications (a la Meizu) of the original Android? A beautiful and unusual design? Is this exactly enough for success?
We have no answers to these questions yet. What do you think?
