There has been no news from the Finnish Jolla Mobile team for many weeks. And so, as they say, they are back. Jussi Hurmola, executive director of Jolla, said in an interview with Gigaom that the company will announce its first device before the end of this year.
Recall that Jolla Mobile was created by former Nokia employees who decided to take the MeeGo platform as the basis for their future OS.
According to Khurmul, at the moment the company’s employees are working on the ecosystem of the operating system, looking for developers, preparing services and navigation. The company developed the user interface for the smartphone from scratch. So it will be very different from the UI that was used in N9.
MeeGo supports many categories of devices: from car dashboards to smartphones and laptops, but developers are not afraid of fragmentation problems. At the moment, they are actively working to ensure that the OS interface and its components are scalable, so that there is no need to rewrite the code or redraw something for each specific device. So the platform is calm about the differences between physical devices.
The platform will be open. One of the top Chinese distributors – DPhone – has already agreed to distribute Jolla Mobile devices. But the first smartphone of the company, whose announcement will take place this year, will first make its debut on the European market.
