Since the launch of the Android mobile platform on September 23, 2008, it has been activated 1 billion times, the search giant reported yesterday, and we decided to calculate how many iOS and Windows Phone devices have also been sold in the world.

So, for Android – 1 billion gadgets. This, by the way, means that over the past 4 months the company has gained 100 million activations.

Apple is doing pretty well too. In June, company representatives reported that the number of iOS gadgets sold exceeded 600 million.

But it turned out to be more difficult to find out how many devices running on Windows Phone were bought. After looking up the Gartner archives for the last four years, we found out:

  • in the first two quarters of this year, 13.3 million WP devices were sold;
  • in 2012, 16.8 million WP devices were sold;
  • in 2011 – 9.7 million WP devices;
  • in the fourth quarter of 2010 – 3.4 million (Windows Phone appeared on the market at the end of October 2010).

We add up and get – 43.2 million.

This, by the way, refers to the question of whether it is necessary to develop applications for this platform.
