The St. Petersburg team JoyBits reported that the total number of downloads of its three Doodle games exceeded the 100 million mark. Most of them came from Flash portals. 

Maximalism is inherent in many young players in the gaming market. Some dynamically developing new segment appears, they rush in his direction, waving their arms and shouting, something like “this is the future of the industry.” Their problem, as a rule, is that they deny the right to exist to all other segments at this moment.

At the same time, the old segments continue to live. Their growth may be much slower, moreover, it may be absent, but this does not prevent them from bringing good money to quality products.

JoyBits understands this perfectly. Abandoning the focus on the two leading platforms helped the company achieve impressive results – breaking the 100 million total installations mark with three Doodle games in three years.

60% of the downloads were on Flash platforms like Kongregate. Another 20 million was brought by the App Store, 10 million by Google Play, 1.5 million by Windows 8, the remaining installations fell on other mobile platforms (including Nook).

The policy of presence on the maximum number of platforms contributes to the growth of virality. As JoyBits CEO Paul Baldwin noted in an interview with AllThingD: the user acquisition strategy has a porous nature. Even if the user does not download the app on his Nook (but sees it in the store), he is more likely to buy it later on his iPhone. 

In confirmation of his own words, Baldwin claims that 95% of all downloads of the Doodle God series are provided with organic traffic. The company almost did not invest in marketing.

This does not mean that the company will continue to have high hopes for the Flash market, which is now dying, giving way to the mobile market, but this is a good reason for other studios to look around and understand that there are other niches besides iOS and Android.

As for the nature of the installations, as Anton Rybakov, the founder and head of JoyBits, noted in an interview with us, more of them (about 80%) in three years fell on English-speaking countries. But after the release of a new version of the game localized in 13 languages this May, the situation has changed dramatically. Russia, China and Brazil immediately entered the top 5 by downloads.

With such a solid player base, the company plans to move in two big directions.

Firstly, JoyBits plans to develop the classic Doodle line. This means not only the creation of a number of projects in new settings, but also the development of branded games (a la Temple Run: Brave) and access to new platforms (consoles, Steam) and new markets, primarily in Asia.

Doodle God 2The second big direction is working on a full-fledged second part of Doodle God, which will be a Free-2-Play game with a large number of innovations in game mechanics.
