It’s been more than a week since the release of the new iOS and the update of the Apple app store, and the controversy around it has not subsided. How critical were the App Store changes for developers and what do they think about it? Read the continuation of our Friday material.

I think it’s too early to judge the latest changes – time must pass for them to affect the placement of seats in the store.
Apple, in its traditional manner, decided for users what is most important to them and emphasized the importance of screenshots. They also stressed that their ranking algorithm knows better what applications people need, and they don’t need to go deep into the top. Whether it’s good or bad, or rather for whom it will be good, and for whom it will be bad – time will tell. It is only obvious that all publishers will have to reconsider the principles of describing their applications.

With the advent of the new version of the App Store, there were chips that were very lacking, namely:

  – the ability to update applications without entering an account password;
  – after starting to install the app, the App Store now does not “throw out” you on Homescreen;
  – you can view the update history.

Of the disadvantages , I would like to note the following:

   – lower speed of the App Store compared to the previous version;
   – fewer items in the application feed (a lot of empty space between the application lines)

In general, the impressions are positive, but very low speed spoils them.

In fact, there are no changes. Yes, the Internet has flourished violently with fabrications aside: “What have they done, they have removed the ranking by release date, they have ruined a huge amount of indie, now they have no launch pad!” But, guys, what kind of launch pad can we talk about? If you look at games, there are 30-60 of them a day, and yes, 95% of them do not bring any wisdom to humanity, but the fact is that each specific application is pushed down at the speed of a bullet. As a result, after the free game appears on the market, it is downloaded only in the first 2-3 days, with a peak of 100-500 users in the first day, depending on the attractiveness of the icon. That’s the launch pad for indie – just a shot! The game will load only if it is promoted or selected by Apple, and the presence of sorting by release date does not play any role in this.

As for the search, I am also extremely skeptical that it will deprive someone of millions. :) People hardly use it, except when they know something about a particular application and are looking for it. In the remaining rare queries, common keywords are used, the output for which is always more than a hundred, and you do not need to have an oblique fathom in your forehead to understand how many downloads this gives.

The only moment that can change something is the departure from the rigid differentiation of tops. Now users don’t have to click “Show Top 50” and “Show 25 more”. Of course, this does not mean that now the jumps of the game on the 276th place will increase 10 times, but the distribution of application downloads, say, from the 10th to the 50th position will have a smoother curve, which, in my opinion, is much more democratic compared to “If you are not in Top 25, you’re in it.”

So, in fact, no changes for iOS 6 developers in terms of the store did not bring: as it was necessary to engage in promotion, so they should be engaged. Here to finish drawing all the background images of games for the new iPhone is yes)), but this is another topic. For users, I think it has become more convenient – everything is more concise and clear. But, of course, time will tell.
