In its latest report, App Annie talked about the most popular app categories, the world’s top publishers, as well as the most profitable games on iOS and Android last January.

According to the number of downloads, the category of games remains out of competition on iOS.

The situation is similar with the distribution of revenue by category. Most of it falls on games.

However, App Annie focuses on the fact that over the past year, social applications have risen 9 positions up to 3rd place. The main role here was played by the Japanese market.

The top three on iOS by downloads include Google, Apple and Rovio.

The release of Temple Run 2 helped the small Imangi Studios also get into the top ten companies for iOS downloads. The studio jumped by as much as 34 positions up to 5th place in a month. Disney lost 3 positions during the same period.

The first place in revenue is held by GungHo, whose Puzzle & Dragons earns up to $75 million per month in Japan alone. Supercell is consistently in second place, and Electronic Arts closes the top three.

The richest companies in the iOS app market are game publishers.

Facebook remains the leader among the companies for downloads on Google Play. Of the gaming companies, Rovio (4th place), Halfbrick (8th place) and Imangi (10th place) have good results.

There are only Japanese and Koreans in the box office top of Google Play. Only 9th place behind the American Kabam.

The leader in downloads among games in January was expected to be Temple Run 2, which managed to collect 50 million downloads on all platforms in just two weeks since its release. It is unclear which part of them fell on the App Store, but by the end of the first month of 2013, it was at the top of the world downloads chart.

On the iTunes App Store, The Blockheads from Majic Jungle Software also showed itself well – a two-dimensional clone of Minecraft, which immediately found itself in the top ten after the release.

The success was accompanied by Ruzzle from MAG Interactive, the game went up 41 positions in a month.

However, Rail Rush deserves even more respect. Game Miniclip.com managed to pull up to the 8th position in the world chart in January, “defeating” 1171 competitors.

Angry Birds Rio also jumped 682 positions. In terms of revenue on iOS, everything is not so interesting.

No new names have appeared since December. The first three looks like this: Puzzle & Dragons, Clash of Clans, Candy Crush Sage.

On Google Play, the leader in downloads is the creation of Kiloo Games – Subway Surfers. Fruit Ninja Free and Angry Birds, which have already become classics, are in second and third places, respectively. Among the bright debutants are Trial Xtreme 3, which has risen by 414 positions, and the new Korean racing project, which has not yet been translated into English.

The latter, by the way, is the second most profitable gaming application in the world on Google Play after Puzzle & Dragon.
