App Annie has published ratings on downloads and publisher revenue for October of this year.

As for the changes that took place over the month: TimeWarner managed to get into the top 10 iOS by the number of downloads due to the popularity of Batman: ArkhamOrigins, and the success of DeerHunter 2014 raised the status of Glu on iOS and Android.

The largest number of downloads is accounted for by large companies – EA, Gameloft, King and Disney. The box office top is also dominated by the giants of the mobile industry – GungHoOnline, Supercell and King.

Comparing data from both AppAnnie ratings on downloads and revenue of games on iOS and/or GooglePlay allows you to divide the leaders into three groups.

The first category includes publishers who have found a place in both the top 10 in terms of the number of downloads and the box office top. Given that they are present in both ratings, it can be concluded that the monetization of these companies’ games is at an average level.

As for the games of companies that got into the top 10 by downloads, but did not make it to the box office, their level of monetization can be considered low. A relatively high number of downloads did not bring a corresponding return in monetary terms.

Such systematization has shown that the following companies have chosen the most successful monetization strategy:

  • GungHoOnline;
  • Supercell;
  • CJ&EM;
  • LINE (technically a platform);
  • GREE;
  • COLOPL;
  • Kabam;
  • DeNA;
  • WeMade.

The list of companies with average monetization rates includes:

  • King;
  • EA;
  • Gameloft;
  • Storm8.

And companies with lower rates:

  • Zakeh;
  • ImangiStudios;
  • TimeWarner;
  • Kiloo;
  • Disney;
  • Rovio;
  • GluMobile;
  • TinyPiece;
  • Tencent (technically a platform).

All publishers are listed in order of decreasing effectiveness of the monetization strategy.

It is also important to note that the world of mobile games is becoming more mature in terms of cross-platform success. In October, seven companies were able to get into the top 10 by the number of downloads of both iOS and Android:

  • EA;
  • Gameloft;
  • GluMobile;
  • Disney;
  • King;
  • TinyPiece (successful Chinese game/app publishers);
  • Rovio.

However, of these, only EA and King also got into the top 10 most successful according to the box office tops of both platforms. And despite their hyped brands, Rovio and Disney are not yet able to achieve lasting success in free-to-play.

Of course, this analysis shows rather rough results. It is necessary to understand that the level of monetization of an f2p game can reach a maximum only a couple of months after launch. Nevertheless, such systematization more picturesquely reflects the situation on the mobile games market.
