Google is going to pull attention away from the release of Windows 8 by releasing the fifth version of Android in the second quarter of 2012.

Android 5 continues the “sweet” tradition and is called Jelly Bean (these are chewable candies in the form of small nuts, from a distance they look like a scattering of confetti).

According to Taiwanese DigiTimes sources, the new OS will be fully optimized for tablets and support the same devices as Windows 8. Moreover, tablet manufacturers will now have the opportunity to install not one, but two systems on devices at once, switching between which will be possible without restarting. Google also plans to use the new Android to enter the netbook and laptop market. The release of the system is scheduled for the second quarter of 2012.

Taiwanese sources attribute this not only to the release of Windows 8 in the third quarter, but also to the company’s desire to recoup for the “failed” Android 4 Ice Cream Sandwich. However, given the fact that the system has just appeared on the market, and most Android users are weeks and months away from “ice cream”, not to mention the warm reception of the OS by journalists, the news seems to be somewhat ahead of time.

The PhoneArena portal also asks not to take the material seriously and calls the data received from DigiTimes “pure speculation“. In their opinion, it is still “strange” to even think about such a thing.

On the other hand, some manufacturers are indeed faced with the fact that Android 4.0 was not as good on tablets as expected. Moreover, everyone remembers that Android 2 was and still remains relevant only for smartphones. So, ultimately, it may turn out that Jelly Bean will be a replacement for not the fourth, but the third version of Android.

Be that as it may, we will only know the exact data about the new system, if it is really being developed, closer to the summer, to the Google I/O 2012 conference.
