The other day Kabam happily announced that its game Fast & Furious 6: The Game has become the champion in download speed among mobile applications. The game has gained 17 million downloads in a month. About how it was – read the material.
Our colleagues from Pocket Gamer, together with Distimo, decided to figure out how the guys from Kabam managed it. Well, we have slightly supplemented the text with fresh figures and entertaining facts.
So, the Vancouver Exploding Barrel Games, bought by Kabam in January of this year for an unknown amount, was responsible for the development of Fast & Furious 6: The Game. The studio was formed from EA Canada, which previously handled the Need For Speed line. In other words, there were industry veterans in the case.
Despite the fact that the game was created under license, it has almost nothing to do with the original title. In “The Hobbit” from the same Kabam there was much more content from the movie than in Fast & Furious 6: The Game.
This is a very curious approach. In fact, the authors of the application almost openly used the popular IP for promotion. Usually the market situation is somewhat different: the game is released in order to collect at least something from the mobile / console market, and here the brand has become one of the catalysts for the growth of a self-sufficient project.
Another interesting solution was the rejection of traditional racing mechanics in favor of the approach previously used in Drag Racing from Creative Mobile and CSR Racing from NaturalMotion. This is a kind of mybrute, in which the player, during the races, mainly has to switch the gearbox in time, and between races he fiddles with his fleet in the garage.
The game, according to App Annie, topped the free top overall in 89 countries and was in the top ten in 131 countries (App Store).

Based on this data, Pocket Gamer believes that in July the application will earn about $ 2 million in the United States.
As for the Asian markets, then the application showed itself better in the Korean market. By June 23, the game was still in the top 100. John Jordan, our colleague with Pocket Gamer, suggested that in China Fast & Furious 6: The Game could still shoot. The release of the original film in China will take place on July 26.
