This is the second Galaxy Interactive investment deal in a year. The company invested in the California-based gaming startup Big Run Studios as part of the seed round through the Galaxy EOS VC Fund.
Big Run Studios is based in San Francisco. She develops casual games for, as she puts it, “an underappreciated audience.” It’s about mobile games in the genre of solitaire, bingo, hearts and so on.
Formally, all her projects are absolutely free. There are no microtransactions in them. However, they are monetized through the Skillz real betting service, which allows users to earn real money.
Recall that the scheme works like this: to enter a certain game session, a player spends a certain real amount. Then, if he wins, half of the prize amount goes to the user, the remaining half is distributed between the game developer and Skillz.
According to GamesIndustry, the collaboration allowed Big Run Studios to achieve steep retention, monetization and growth of other indicators. Downloads of the studio’s most successful game — Blackout Blitz on iOS have just “crawled” to the 2 million mark since December.
How exactly the developer plans to enrich the raised $ 1.4 million is not reported. The founder and CEO of the studio, Andrew Bell, only noted that launching successful games today requires large teams and healthy brands to promote.
For Galaxy Interactive, this is the second deal since February. A little earlier, a company specializing in investments in IT companies announced a $3.3 million tranche to the American esports organization Tempo Storm. In November 2019, Galaxy invested $27 million in the interactive gaming broadcast business of Genvid Technologies.
