A beta version of the Unity engine with 64-bit architecture support for iOS is expected at the end of January next year.

The rush is explained by the fact that Apple has set a deadline: after February 1, 2015, all applications uploaded to the App Store must be made using the iOS 8 SDK and support 64-bit code.

The beta version of the new engine will be made based on Unity 4.6. 64-bit architecture support will not be added to earlier versions. The release of the final version of the engine, according to Unity management, will depend on the release date of Unity 5.

“In order to release an engine with 64-bit architecture support for iOS as soon as possible, we decided to work with the latest version of Unity 4.x is Unity 4.6. If you have games built on earlier versions of the engine in development, then in order to implement them in the App Store, these games will need to be adapted to Unity 4.6.x or Unity 5, – said Unity Development Director Vilmantas Balasevicius.”
