The most popular game engine in the UK is Unity. 72% of local studios are developing games on it.

TIGA analysts surveyed 10% of small, medium and large British studios, according to MCV. Respondents were allowed to specify more than one engine on which they create games for various platforms.

The votes were distributed as follows:

  • 72% — Unity;
  • 27% — Unreal Engine;
  • 27% — own studio engines.

The percentage of using proprietary proprietary engines is quite large. TIGA identifies several reasons.

Firstly, such engines are more profitable in the long run, although at the very beginning it takes more time to develop and debug them than to work with third-party software. This opinion was expressed by Chris Kingsley, the technical director of Rebellion, which uses the native Azura engine.

Secondly, studios initially write a game engine for their own game. It is easier to adjust it to a specific project, having full access to the source code.

Thirdly, you can use your own engine for free in the following studio projects.

Nevertheless, most British studios aimed at self-publishing still choose third-party engines.
