Unity has introduced a free educational initiative called Career Pathways. Its goal is to teach 80 thousand people to work professionally with the engine in three years, even if they have never programmed before.

As Unity explains, the idea of a new educational program arose against the background of widespread unemployment due to COVID-19. To cope with this problem, the company in early spring made the Unity Learn Premium training platform free for everyone. Now Unity has decided to open special courses where you can learn to program from scratch.

Career Pathways is a program with many small courses inside it. After passing them, students will have their own portfolio and educational certificates.

So far Unity has launched only two courses:

  • Unity Essentials. It is designed for those who want to get acquainted with the basic basics of Unity. You can complete the training in about one or two weeks. During this time, students will watch several video tutorials from “Unity veterans” and make their first game.
  • Junior Programmer. This is a course for slightly more experienced developers. You can switch to it immediately after Unity Essentials (or instead, if students are already somewhat familiar with the engine). At the same time, students still do not have to understand programming or even mathematics. The study will take 60 hours — about three to four months. During the course, you will need to master Unity and C#, develop five projects and pass two exams.

The next courses will appear in 2021. The entire initiative is paid for from the budgets of the Unity Social Impact Foundation, where not so long ago the company donated 750 thousand of its shares.

By the way, just a month ago Unity launched the Game Growth Program for independent mobile developers. As part of it, the company promised to help developers with scaling applications.
