For fighting games, microtransactions are not the most common thing. For example, in the recently released Dead or Alive 6, there is no opportunity to purchase in-game content for real currency yet. But in Mortal Kombat 11, such an option will appear, and this fact worries the players.
Mortal Kombat 11
Developer NetherRealm Studios has confirmed that there will be microtransactions in their title coming out next week. But the head of the studio, Shaun Himmerick, assures that there is nothing to worry about, Gamespot writes.
The creators of Mortal Kombat 11 already had experience in implementing microtransactions in the fighting game Injustice 2. Before its release, the developers had to explain to excited players how the monetization system works in the game.
Loot boxes and microtransactions in Injustice 2
- In Injustice 2, character customization plays a big role. It is necessary to strengthen the heroes at the expense of individual items of equipment (for the head, arms, legs, and so on).
- You can get all these items during the game or from loot boxes. There are 10 varieties of the latter in the game at once. The players suspected that Injustice 2 would be made into a pay-and-win title. However, loot boxes with reinforcing equipment are quite easily earned during the game. Besides, you can’t spend real money on them anyway.
Loot Boxes in Injustice 2There are also four types of virtual currency in the game.
- One of them — Source Crystals — can be replenished for real money. It allows you to buy only cosmetic items that do not affect the gameplay.
Purchase of cosmetic itemsAlso, Source Crystals is designed to pump characters immediately up to the maximum 20th level.
Microtransactions in Mortal Kombat 11
- There will be no loot boxes in Mortal Kombat 11. All in-game purchases will be made directly.
- It is also impossible to buy equipment that enhances characteristics for real currency. Only cosmetic items will be available for purchase. In particular, the invested funds are converted into “time crystals”, which can be spent on looks for heroes, as well as poses, animations, equipment items, etc. There will be no opportunity to speed up the progression due to microtransactions in the game.
Mortal Kombat 11 InterfaceSeparately, the developers noted that all things in the fighting game, available for real currency, can be unlocked during the game, without affecting the “crystals of time”.
- The latter, by the way, can also be obtained without investing real funds.
The exact prices for in-game currency in Mortal Kombat 11 have not yet been named.
Please note that in January of this year, NetherRealm did not plan to introduce micropayments and loot boxes in Mortal Kombat 11. This was stated by the developers to the journalist of “Igromania”. However, the option with microtransactions was still added to the game.
