Nexon will raise the salaries of its employees at the request of the union. Before that, no publisher in South Korea had openly declared such intentions.

According to The Korea Herald, the salaries of Nexon employees will increase by 6.8%. Salaries in the publisher’s subsidiary, Nexon GT, will also be increased.

Until now, it has not been customary in the country’s industry to disclose the coefficients of salary increases. Thus, Nexon has set a precedent. The company said transparent reporting leads to a “constructive future.”

The publisher took this step after negotiations with its trade union, Starting Point. Last week, they signed a preliminary agreement on salary increases in 2020. The union will vote for its final approval in another week.

Of all the South Korean publishers, only Nexon and Smilegate have their own trade union organizations. The Nexon Workers’ Union was founded in 2018. In 2019, he held a demonstration and demanded that the management employ a hundred employees. After the closure of four internal projects, they were all offered interviews for other positions in the company. The union sought to ensure that people were guaranteed to be assigned to other projects.

By the way, the Starting Point rally also prompted the SG Guild trade union of Smilegate employees to take action. After their demonstration, the publisher agreed to pay overtime and, like Nexon, to redistribute teams when projects were closed.
