Rogue Games did not pull the Vainglory service. The publisher closed the mobile MOBA servers after only five months of operation. But the developer is Super Evil Megacorp. I am ready to maintain my title on my own.

The situation with Vainglory was clarified by the CEO of Super Evil Megacorp. Kristian Segerstrale on Reddit. Rogue Games also published a letter of explanation on its official website.

How Rogue Games published Vainglory

Last November, Rogue Games became the publisher of Vainglory. Before that, Super Evil Megacorp. I supported the game myself. The situation changed after leaving Super Evil Megacorp. Two of the four co-founders: Stephan Sherman and Bo Daly, who founded the new Bazooka Tango studio.

Rogue Games and Super Evil Megacorp. We agreed that the first one will take over the operation, server maintenance and content creation for Vainglory. This allowed the second to focus on the development of the next game — Project Spellfire.

As reported in the letter to Rogue Games, very soon the publisher realized that “astronomical sums” were being spent on server support. “We spent more on server support than many studios spend on whole games,” the company noted. In addition, the publisher’s financial situation has been shaken due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The decision of Rogue Games to leave the project was also influenced by the opening of Bazooka Tango. The fact is that the startup of Delhi and Sherman is developing games based on the Vainglory universe. They recently announced a multiplayer Vainglory All-Stars on the Super Evil Megacorp engine. The game should launch this spring.

The upcoming release of All-Stars caught Rogue Games by surprise. Fearing competition with new titles on the same IP, the publisher decided to “return the game to its developers.”

“We didn’t come to this easily or quickly, but this decision should ultimately benefit Rogue Games and, more importantly, Vainglory. We tried very hard. And we are sorry,” the letter says.

On March 27, as Segerstrail clarified, Rogue Games severed relations with Super Evil Megacorp. and disabled the game servers outside of China. Note that in the Celestial Empire, the local publisher NetEase is engaged in the game, everything works as usual.

Super Evil Megacorp. worked around the clock to take control of the server. She succeeded a few days later. Soon the studio shared plans for the development of its MOBA.

Like Super Evil Megacorp. will publish Vainglory

Most important: Super Evil Megacorp. will not look for a new publisher for Vainglory. The developer plans to rebuild the game, from which a large amount of content disappeared after Rogue Games left. In addition, the studio has indefinitely disabled IAP.

The title will be restored in stages.

  • Many social functions (friends, chat, leaderboards, events, progress) and modes supported by the publisher have disappeared from Vainglory. “Almost everything except the start menu will work poorly,” the developer said. He will try to modify some functions and add them to the game in the next month. At the same time, it is planned to eliminate the largest bugs.
  • Also Super Evil Megacorp. he will try to reload all the trophies, progress and skins lost by the players. But it will happen much later.
  • One of the biggest innovations in Vainglory may be private game servers. “With the help of a partner organization, private server hosting will become available to community members,” the company writes.
  • These servers will also act as backup servers: they will store the progress of individual players. Thus, the developer will take off some of the social and server functions. “Instead of relying on a new publisher, we want to find out if we can ensure a long life for the game with the participation of the community,” Segerstrail said.

When Super Evil Megarcorp. will be able to implement all innovations, it will become finally clear after the approval of the roadmap.
