A collector’s edition of the diaries of the famous game designer Jordan Mechner has been published. Now readers can not only learn how Prince of Persia was created, but also see sketches of different stages of the game, author’s notes on the margins of pages and comments about the future of the story.

The first part of the Prince of Persia franchise was launched back in 1989 for the Apple II. The release turned out to be a failure — by the summer of 1990, only 7 thousand copies had been sold in the USA. The game was able to succeed only on other platforms. By the time the sequel was released in 1993, several million copies had already been sold.

This is the second edition of Mekhner’s diaries. It is prepared for the 30th anniversary of the series.

The book covers the period from 1985 to 1993. Like the 2011 version, it reveals what creative, technical and personal difficulties Mehner faced during the creation and launch of Prince of Persia. The key difference is a lot of illustrations with modern comments by the author:

  • old sketches of a game designer;
  • animation performed using a rotoscope:
  • screenshots from Prince of Persia;
  • sketches of characters, game items, backgrounds, etc.

A 32-page “Legacy” section has also been added separately. In it, Mehner tells what he thinks about the fate of the franchise, the Disney movie and Ubisoft games.

Note: Ubisoft recently announced the release of a remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time for PC and Sony and Microsoft consoles. The official release date is set for January 21.
