The Canadian indie studio Snowman, which developed the snowboard runners Alto’s Adventure and Alto’s Odyssey, has launched another studio. Land & Sea will be engaged in games that will be dedicated to folklore.

This decision of the developers is reported by The Verge with reference to an interview with the leading artist Harry Nesbitt (Harry Nesbitt). According to Nesbitt, the team has already thought about a new project more than once, but only now it turned out to be ready to take this step.

“In fact, in the Alto franchise, we barely touched the stories we want to tell,” Nesbitt noted. “We believe that it is worth paying more attention to the narrative. We want our players to go on a journey and maybe learn something new about themselves and the land around them.”

The concept of “folklore” games should help the studio in this. As Nesbitt says, such games give gamers a sense of connection with something bigger than everyday life – “with a world filled with subtle nuances that exists outside the screen and remains with [the player] for a long time after the game.”

The Land & Sea team included Nesbitt himself, as well as producer Jair McBain, composer Todd Baker, designer Joe Grainger and writer Jenna Jovi. In addition to creating their own projects, the studio will continue to work on the Alto franchise together with Snowman.

The Folklore studio is not ready to reveal the first project yet, but it is already known that it will be “an accessible fairy tale about growing up against the background of an ancient pastoral landscape.”

Alto’s Adventure and Alto’s Odyssey are considered to be among the best mobile runners. Snowman titles have been awarded various prestigious awards more than once: they were noted at the Gamer’s Choice Awards, New York Game Awards, SXSW Gaming Awards and many other awards. In addition, downloads of both parts of the franchise on Android amounted to 42 million and collected about half a million dollars there. And on iOS, the total revenue of the project reached $ 4.5 million, according to AppMagic.
