Tonight Sony decided to temporarily remove Cyberpunk 2077 from the PS Store and return the money to those who have already bought the game. When exactly the CD Projekt RED project will appear again in the store is unknown.
Sony announced such a radical decision on the PlayStation website. At the same time, the company practically did not explain its actions in any way. The only thing she referred to (in a rather vague wording) was gamers’ dissatisfaction with the quality of Cyberpunk 2077.
CD Projekt RED has already commented on the situation. As she explained, this decision was made after discussing the refand for those gamers who bought Cyberpunk 2077 in the PS Store.
The Polish studio also added that players can still buy the title in retail stores. In addition, all existing disk and digital copies will continue to receive support and updates from CD Projekt RED.
Analyst Daniel Ahmad also managed to express an opinion about what happened. He noted that this is an unprecedented case in the history of the industry. According to him, something similar happened with the PC version of Batman: Arkham Knight, but then the decision was made by the publisher himself, not the platform.
Moreover, Cyberpunk 2077 could easily have avoided this situation, the analyst pointed out. Even if the release had been postponed for another year, the community would have accepted it calmly. But CD Projekt RED chose the option with crunches and the launch of the title on the promised date, which did not benefit anyone.
Ahmad suggested that the story of the removal of Cyberpunk 2077 from the PS Store could affect the entire industry. In particular, this may affect the certification process, marketing principles and mechanisms for returning funds to players.
There will also be wider impacts on the industry when it comes to guidelines for marketing, certification and refunds from a publisher and platform holder level
Anyway, will be interesting to see how CDPR respond + how they can salvage the lost goodwill they built up over years
