Sony has shared the results of the third fiscal quarter of 2018. According to them, for the full fiscal year Sony can get a record profit from its gaming segment.
Revenue and operating profit from games and online services
In the third fiscal quarter of 2018, Sony’s gaming division earned $7.2 billion. This is 10% more than in the same fiscal quarter of 2017. This growth is due to good sales of software for PS4, according to Niko Partners.
45% of the revenue came from digital sales on the PlayStation Network. This is $3.9 billion, which is 45% more than in the fiscal quarter a year earlier.
For the full calendar year, PSN brought Sony $12.5 billion. Nikp Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad notes that the annual revenue of the entire Nintendo turned out to be less.
Distribution of the rest of the quarterly income:
- 28% came from PS4 sales;
- 10% — from PS Plus services (36.3 million players subscribed to it), PS Now, etc.;
- 10% — from sales of peripherals and other devices (PS VR and accessories).
- Sony earned 7% on software packages.
At the same time, the operating profit of the division decreased by 14% in annual terms. It amounts to $668 million. This was due to a decrease in the sales rate of the PS4 console.
Forecast for the full fiscal year
Sony expects a record operating profit from the gaming division this fiscal year, despite the imminent end of the PS4 lifecycle. Her projected $2.8 billion is the highest figure in the company’s history.
The annual revenue of Sony’s gaming segment can also become a record — $21.4 billion.
Console sales
During the third fiscal quarter of 2018, Sony sold 8.1 million PlayStation 4. As already mentioned, the sales rate decreased.
Hardware sales fell to 8.1 million units in the quarter, but we expected this, our entire console is in its sixth year.

For the entire calendar year 2018, the number of PS4 sold reached 17.7 million . This made the console the market leader in terms of sales. For example, Nintendo managed to implement 17.4 million Switches in the same time.
The total number of PS4 sold since its release is 94.2 million. Sony is very close to selling 100 million anniversary consoles.
