Yesterday Facebook hosted the annual Facebook Connect VR/AR conference, which used to be called Oculus Connect. We have collected the main news of the event.
Oculus Quest 2
The rumors about the new Oculus VR glasses turned out to be true.
Facebook confirmed the leaked information and said that Quest 2 will go on sale on October 13 and will cost $299 for a model with 64 GB of memory and $499 for a model with 256 GB. Pre-order is already open in 22 countries, but Russia is not on this list.
Officially confirmed characteristics:
- Snapdragon XR2 chip;
- 6 GB of RAM;
- resolution 1832×1920 per eye with 72 Hz refresh rate (90 Hz will also be supported in the future);
- three positions for adjusting the lens instead of two for the original Quest;
- built-in speakers with a cinematic positional 3D sound reproduction system;
- battery life: 2-3 hours;
- updated Touch controllers with four times longer battery life.
Quest 2 is completely autonomous and does not require a PC. However, VR glasses can be connected to a computer using an Oculus Link cable to play games for Oculus Rift and Rift S. The device also supports all games for Quest 1.
Rift S and Oculus Quest 1
Facebook is going to focus on standalone VR headsets, so the company will no longer produce devices that work only with PCs. The Rift S will remain on sale until 2021, and the original Quest will disappear from store shelves as soon as Quest 2 is there. By the way, it is no longer possible to place an online order for a first-generation headset.
At the same time, the company intends to continue to support these platforms. Facebook has promised to release updates for VR glasses even after the devices cannot be bought. In addition, at the conference, Facebook announced a number of new games for the Rift. Among them are Medal of Honor, Population: One and Pistol Whip 2089.
Recall that since October, Facebook has stopped supporting Oculus accounts. So users will need a profile on this social network to log in to Quest 2. In old VR headsets, you can still use an Oculus account, but only until January 2023.
