Facebook has abandoned another VR headset. Oculus will cease support and production of Oculus Go.

The manufacturer reports that Oculus Go will be removed from the assembly line. In December, the company will stop installing software for this headset and will stop releasing new updates. Oculus Go will update security protocols and fix bugs, but only until 2022.

Together with the closure of the Oculus Go project, the company will refuse to release any 3DOF devices (systems with three degrees of freedom). “The future of VR is behind 6DOF,” Oculus said in a statement.

So now Oculus will redirect resources to support Rift and Quest with their six degrees of freedom. In particular, it promises new software distribution opportunities for these helmets outside of the Oculus Store.

Oculus Go was released in 2018. It has become one of the most affordable helmets on the market (its cost is $199). In the last quarter of 2019, the device, according to SuperData, sold 84 thousand copies. This is more than the Oculus Rift S for the same period.

Let’s add that the helmet is fully compatible with the application library for Samsung Gear VR. Facebook also stopped supporting the latter, as reported in the spring. New Gear VR software will no longer be added to the store from September 15.
