The version of Pokémon GO for Apple Watch will soon cease to exist. On July 1, Niantic will stop supporting software for smartwatches.
This means that users will no longer be able to link the Pokémon GO game on the iPhone with the satellite app in the watch. The functionality of the game on the Apple Watch was limited to counting steps and displaying Pokemon and poketstops on the map. All this has been replaced by the new Adventure Sync feature, which has been available in the game in the player’s smartphone since November.
For this reason, Niantic decided to abandon the Apple Watch version. The company announced that it wants to focus on the development of Adventure Sync, rather than splitting the Pokémon GO gameplay into two devices. But this step of the studio may also indicate that the Apple Watch does not justify itself as a gaming platform in the market of geolocation games.
The Pokémon GO app for Apple’s smartwatch was released in December 2016.
