A third of gaming industry workers do not receive overtime pay. This is reported in a study conducted by IGDA.
IGDA – the international Association of Video Game Developers – conducted a survey among 3 thousand respondents. Half of the respondents reported that they work from 40 to 44 hours a week. 18% noted that their working week lasts 45-49 hours, and for 12% it lasts 50-59 hours.
Two-thirds of respondents (62%) admitted that crunches occur in the process of work. For 61%, they are “commonplace.” Of those who reported that they did not deal with processing, 44% noted that they were late at work. However, they do not call it “crunches”. A third of the respondents (31%) worked 50-59 hours during the crunch, another third (30%) – 60-69 hours. A minority (17%) worked 70 hours in emergency mode.
36% did not receive monetary compensation for overtime. The rest of the crunches were reimbursed not necessarily with money: 47% received compensation with food, and 27% received additional days off.
Freelancers are also at risk. According to the study, 57% do not even discuss overtime pay. Almost two-thirds (59%) of freelancers reported that they were not expected to work beyond the paid time. But 36% confirmed that this was implied.
The majority of respondents work in the USA (57%), Canada (10%) and the UK (5%). The age of the respondents is from 16 to 81 years. However, the largest age group is represented by people 25-29 years old (26%) and 30-34 years old (25%).
