Part of the team that worked on the Skullgirls fighting game has merged into a new studio. This happened after their former boss and founder of Lab Zero Games was accused of harassment and fired all employees. The new Future Club studio has a cooperative structure.
This means that every employee of the company will have the opportunity to influence not only the development of games, but also its vector of development.
“We wanted to start with a clean face and found a company that would be owned by employees, in which everyone would have the right to vote. We appreciate open, honest communication between colleagues, partners and players, and we are also proud of our strong team,“ said Francesca Esquenazi, CEO of the studio.
The developers made a similar decision after a scandal with their former boss. When Mike Zaimont, the founder of Lab Zero Games, was accused of harassment and inappropriate behavior in August, he refused to leave his post and eventually simply disbanded the team without paying benefits.
The founders of the Future Club are confident that they will be able to avoid such conflicts and mistakes in the future. “It is very important to find ways to resolve conflict situations in advance, when we are just getting together. I hope we will come up with a plan that will help us work together for many years,“ said Mariel “Kinuko” Cartwright, creative producer of the company.
Now the Future Lab team has 15 people. In addition to plans to support Skullgirls and Indivisible, developers are already working on new titles. They have several pitches on their hands, which they will soon be ready to show to publishers.
