Licensed online bookmakers and casinos in Brazil paid 8.7 billion Brazilian reals (1.4 billion euros) in taxes to the budget from January to June 2026 — 76.86% more than in the same period of 2025, according to the country's Federal Revenue Service.
For comparison: during the first six months of regulation, which started on January 1, 2025, operators contributed 4.9 billion reals in taxes, and by the end of last year, collections reached 9.95 billion reals with a rate of 12% on gross gaming revenue.
Meanwhile, the sector faces increasing political pressure: President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has called for a ban on online casinos, and liberals propose to restrict sports betting as well. Brazilian lawyer and politician, as well as a senator from the state of Rio de Janeiro, Flávio Nantes Bolsonaro emphasizes tightening the regulation of online bookmakers in his campaign platform ahead of the October elections.
Despite the criticism, the government needs revenue, and prohibitions are unlikely to occur. The tax rate is planned to increase to 15% next year and to 18% by 2028.
