This Saturday, as part of the PlayStation Experience, Double Fine Studio presented an updated version of Grim Fandango, a cult quest about the adventures of a travel agent of the afterlife Department of Death, Manny Calavera.

Появились первые детали о Grim Fandango

So far, the new product has been announced only for PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Windows, OS X and Linux. It will be released on them on January 27. But, given Double Fine’s extensive experience in publishing and porting its own games to mobile platforms (Costume Quest, The Cave and, of course, Broken Age), it seems to us that we can safely hope for the release of Grim Fandango within iOS/Android.

The game, by the way, is perfect for iPad. The developers, as far as can be understood from the first trailer, did not redraw the project under the more common image format today 16 to 9/16 to 10. Therefore, on Apple tablets with an aspect ratio of 4 to 3 (like Grim Fandango), it will clearly look better (no black stripes on the sides of the screen).

As for the key differences between the novelty and the original, there are very few of them:

  • new lighting;
  • new textures;
  • remade sound;
  • new control scheme.

However, despite this, the game still looks morally outdated. It could also be redrawn, as was done in the case of Monkey Island.

Also on the topic:

Double Fine is an American company founded by the author of the Monkey Island game series Tim Schafer in 2000. So far, the studio’s most notable project is the platformer-long-term Psychonauts. The main merit of Double Fine recently is considered to be the creation of a HYPE around the Kickstarter crowdfunding service.
