On the eve of the New Year, the Steam team decided to name the most successful games of 2021. Valheim and Battlefield 2042 were in the top sales, and Cyberpunk 2077 and Halo Infinite were in the top online.

The games inside the collections are placed randomly, and it is not said which specific place went to this or that title. When compiling these lists, the Steam team looked at the data from January 1 to December 15, 2021.
Sales Leaders
In total, the platform included 100 games in the list. She divided them into four categories depending on how much the game earned over the year: “platinum”, “gold”, “silver” and “bronze”. Note that Steam took into account both sales of titles and DLC themselves, as well as in-game purchases.
In 2021, six games entered the category with “platinum bestsellers” for the first time. These are New World, Valheim, Battlefield 2042, NARAKA: BLADEPOINT, Apex Legends and Dead by Daylight. But Dota 2, CS:GO and GTA V were included in the list for the sixth time in a row.
The best novelties
In this top, Steam included 25 games that earned the most in the first two weeks of sales since the release. The platform also looked at which months the most successful new products were released. November became the unequivocal leader — then five games from the top appeared on Steam at once. The second place for May — four box office novelties.
The most popular games
This list includes projects whose online reach exceeded 30 thousand simultaneous players. It turned out, for example, that ten games were able to recruit more than 200 thousand users online. Among them were Cyberpunk 2077, Halo Infinite, PUBG and Rust.
The best games released from Early Access in 2021
According to Steam, in just 2021, more than a thousand games in the early access format appeared on its platform. Nevertheless, she included only “those titles that have come a long way after the debut” in this top. When selecting games, the Steam team looked at the revenue.
Sales Leaders in Virtual Reality
Steam also named the 100 VR bestsellers of the year. In this list, the platform included only those games that were developed exclusively for virtual reality (in other words, games in which VR is not the main function were not included in it). In just a year, about 500 VR titles were released in the app store, but only one novelty managed to break into the number of “platinum bestsellers” — Into the Radius.
The best controller-enabled games
This top is formed from titles in which there were the most unique players with controllers during the year. Sports games turned out to be especially successful. For example, three football simulators received platinum at once: FIFA 21, FIFA 22 and eFootball 2022.
