A group of enthusiasts at Poem Studios is working on a remake of the cult role-playing game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Unreal Engine 4 is used as the engine.

The authors call their project, titled as Apeiron, both a remake and a remaster of the original game. Poem Studios promise not only to recreate familiar locations, but also to add new worlds, missions, interface and even new companions.

However, the first screenshots – from the pre-alpha version of the project – cause questions rather than delight. We mean: the use of basic models from the engine editor, the excess of bloom and the first-person view.

In any case, the developers report that they are going to distribute their creation for free. The reason is explained by the studio itself: Disney manages the rights to the original game, therefore, according to the developers, it is allowed to make a remake of the game, but it cannot be sold. However, it is unclear whether Disney itself is aware of the initiative.

However, Poem Studios does not intend to refuse donations. But the studio intends to allow them to be implemented a little later, when most of the game is done. And now the developers will be glad of any help in the development itself. You can follow the latter on Twitch and Twitter.

The original project, we recall, was published in 2003. Bioware studio was responsible for its development, today better known for such series as Mass Effect and Dragon Age.  The game received very high ratings in both the Western and domestic press. The project’s Metacritic rating is 94 points. At the end of 2003, Knights of the Old Republic received more than a dozen awards, including a statuette from BAFTA as the best game of 2003 for Xbox.

In May 2013, the game was released on iOS by Aspyr Media studio, and a little over a year later it appeared on Android.
