On the eve of the release of Cyberpunk 2077, the press has already put up the first estimates — now the average score is kept at 91/100. Despite this, reviewers often point out the shortcomings of the game.

About the game

Cyberpunk 2077 is an open—world action RPG that CD Projekt RED has been working on since 2012. This is the first major project of the Polish studio after the release of The Witcher 3, which brought the company worldwide fame.

Cyberpunk 2077 takes place in the universe of Mike Pondsmith’s board game Cyberpunk 2020. He also acted as a consultant for the project, and one of the main roles, rocker Johnny Silverhand, was played by Keanu Reeves.

The release date of Cyberpunk 2077 was postponed several times — the last time the project was postponed after it went “for gold”. The game will officially be released on December 10, and an updated version for PS5 and Xbox Series X will appear next year.

Opinions of critics

More than a dozen publications have already given Cyberpunk 2077 the highest score. Also, the game did not leave Russian gaming journalists indifferent.

It’s just an uncompromising game. Now the entire gaming industry is looking at the success of “Cyberpunk. If he shoots, we are waiting for a lot of new single games. If it fails, many publishers will decide to leave in the direction of grindilok and sessions.

Critics often point out that the game is not a new word in the genre, many solutions are taken from other RPG and open-world projects. At the same time, CD Projekt managed to keep its signature handwriting.

Moving around Night City is a bit like GTA, and the combat system and RPG mechanics are Fallout and Skyrim. However, the story and the world seem completely new and original. Like the modified V body, the game acquires its own identity from a mix of different sources of inspiration, like Frankenstein woven from other great games.

It is also worth noting that journalists received review copies only for PC – it will be possible to understand how the game works on consoles only after the release. Perhaps even more technical problems await the players there.

Among the shortcomings, journalists note a relatively short duration — most took about 20 hours to complete the main story. However, all this is compensated by a huge number of secondary quests and variability (including in terms of endings).

After 45 hours in Cyberpunk 2077, I managed to complete the game in seven different ways, including three completely different final missions and five completely different but impressive endings. And I still have a lot of tasks and mysteries to solve. The more time you spend in the game, the more it will reward you.

IGN

The secondary quests seem to have succeeded CD Projekt the best. Journalists compare the level of elaboration of such tasks with the third “Witcher” and praise the characters associated with them.

Some of the most memorable characters and storylines are found in side quests, and you may never see them if you don’t turn away from the main plot. I do not know how many tens (or hundreds) of hours of additional content there are in the game, but the task log does not stop growing.

Game Informer

You will be so emotionally immersed in these characters that you will worry about them more than the problems of V. himself. There are soulful moments, brilliant humor and emotional shocks that you don’t always expect. All thanks to convincing characters who will undoubtedly become one of the best in the history of games.

GamesRadar+

Some publications expectedly note a large number of bugs and glitches — both critical and minor. Although the VGC portal gave the game the highest score, it did not recommend it for purchase on the first day (especially for console players).

When it works without errors, Cyberpunk 2077 is an unforgettable experience for all fans of story games — both big and small. But, again, it is difficult for us to encourage you to play it on release and not warn about numerous bugs.

VGC

Like many authors, Jeff Grubb from VentureBeat scolds the game for bugs. However, most of all he criticizes the open world, which, in his opinion, is just a sterile decoration. His rating was the lowest — 3 stars out of 5.

Despite the fact that the city seems to be alive thanks to mind-blowing retracing, it is sterile. Nothing happens in Night City. At its core, Cyberpunk 2077 is a game about activity on the map. You choose a quest in the menu and do what the developers have designed for you. Cyberpunk 2077 is so ambitious that you expect more from it. And when some element is missing in the game, it ruins the whole experience even more.

VentureBeat

GameSpot also notes problems with the environment. At the same time, journalist Kallie Plagge additionally criticizes the representation of individual cultures and groups of people that may seem “offensive”.

At every step there is a fetishization of transgender people, while there is only one minor trans character in the game, and there is no way to play for a real transgender yourself.

GameSpot

Despite the shortcomings, most journalists agree that Cyberpunk is in many ways a unique experience. This is a game with great attention to the plot, the world and the characters, but with a number of technical problems and imperfect gameplay mechanics.

In the midst of such intense anticipation and intense attention to the game, it’s easy to fantasize about what Cyberpunk 2077 could be. The final experience may seem much more familiar than many predicted. A lot of elements are not perfect, but the game oozes details and engaging stories. Cyberpunk 2077 is an RPG in which you will not have time to blink, as several hours will pass. This is exactly what we need to complete 2020.
