Monster Hunter

Japanese publisher Capcom announced the imminent worldwide iOS release of Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, the mobile version of Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, released in 2008 for PSP.

They promise improved graphics compared to the original, no IAP and a price tag of $15.99.

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite has already been released in Japan. There she has been in the Top 10 paid games for a month.

Monster Hunter Freedom is not the first mobile game of the franchise. Previously, Monster Hunter Dynamic Hunting and Monster Hunter Frontier Egg Run were released on iOS and Android. However, they were not ports, but original developments.

About the series

The series, in theory, fits perfectly on free-2-play rails. The gameplay of any part of Monster Hunter easily fits into the next cycle:

  • I took a quest to kill a monster in the city;
  • I bought equipment (the series is famous for its very wide assortment, up to combat bagpipes-hammers and costumes with cat ears);
  • I went to explore the locations, look for the ordered monster, kill and skin other representatives of the fauna along the way;
  • Completed the order;
  • Returned to the city, took the reward for the order, sold the skins;
  • I took a murder quest in the city.

But the series has not yet mastered shareware monetization. However, as Square Enix’s experience shows, the fee and high price does not prevent ports from consoles from earning well.

So our main concern, with regard to the imminent release of Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, is related to how the control is implemented in the game. In the console version, not only the crosspiece and action buttons were actively involved, but also the stick and the PSP “shoulders”.

Monster Hunter 3 (Wii U)

For this reason, it is not entirely clear how playable the mobile version is. Anyway, the game supports iOS gamepads.

The franchise is currently one of Capcom’s main sources of profit. Monster Hunter 4, which in the Nintendo 3DS version earned the company more than $44 million.

By the way, most of this money went to the creation of a new Capcom mobile studio. It is quite possible that Monster Hunter Freedom Unite is just her first project.
